Beaver Boardwalk
Today was a total surprise. Weather being a litle inclement, and having arranged to re-locate to a different room in view of the issues last night, we decided to head for Hilton (east of Jasper) as it was predicted to be a little more sunny and warm there.
Well, quite accidentally, we discovered the Beaver Boardwalk. It's basically a raised wooden walkway across an area created by beavers. Great for bird watching but we didn't see a beaver. Shame! Anyway, it was another completely different landscape and I am sure there will be very few tourists who visit it as an itinerary item within their Rockies tour. Still, we found the trip very enjoyable and this is what it looked like:
Now, the remainder of the day was pretty quiet and we decided to pay a visit this evening to the bar where we are staying that just opened today. Mistake! Pleasant enough suroundings and whilst prices were predictably high, it was all a bit weird. It has all the prospect of being a cool place to hang out after a day of sightseeing but, come on, the lady in charge (front of house) could at least have worn a pair of stockings/tights that were not so severely laddered! Also, she had a habit of following people around and trying to chat with them when quite clearly they just wanted to be left alone and had a problem working the till - as she seemed to be the only person authorised to do so, this created a bit of a problem.
We are clearly not in the bar/restaurant business but the way to encourage your staying guests to use the place after it's been closed for an 'out of season' period, would surely have been to offer some incentive to get the place buzingand particularly in view of all the local competition? How about half price drinks and a percentage off the food bill for starters?
Rant over. But when I asked for the check and she said 'would you like a machine?' I almost lost it but managed to keep it clean. I did tell Jan though what was in my mind and she burst out laughing.
